Lakoff and Martin -Sexism in language
George Lakoff (in Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things)& Emily Martin( The Egg & Sperm) both observed the way some usually unremarkable aspect of language encodes damaging assumptions about sex, gender, or sexuality. But are notions like sexism applicable here, where individuals are minimally responsible for the norms of their language? Analyze the relationship between language and power in at least one of those works, and try to determine whether a better way is possible.
