Medical Emergencies in Primary Care
Medical emergencies that occur in the primary care office are a great concern for practitioners. Proper planning for unexpected medical emergencies can help reduce anxiety and improve the outcomes for clients. Common to both adult and pediatric settings are respiratory distress (asthma), anaphylaxis, shock, seizure, and cardiac arrest. Primary care offices should purchase emergency equipment and medications that would support the possible emergencies that may be seen in their clients. This should also reflect the proximity of the nearest hospital; in a rural office setting there may be more to do, more than just stabilize a critically ill patient. Rural offices should consider purchasing equipment and medications that may be beneficial during a prolonged resuscitation, such as a cardiac monitor, emergency medications and/or intravenous fluids. Advanced Practice Nurses should make every effort to maintain current certification in basic or advanced lifesaving courses. Offices may also wish to create a written emergency protocol that outlines the steps to be followed in the event of a medical emergency. In this unit you will continue to discuss ways that specific medical emergencies may be managed in primary care offices.
