history and policies of corrections
Paper instructions:
Part 1::
This is your opportunity to surf the net and learn about history and policies of corrections in a specific state. Look on the Internet for sites about the “history of corrections” in a specific state. As a suggestion, Google history of corrections and several sites come up. Select the state where you were born or where one of your parent’s was born. This will give us a variety of facts from different states. If you are from a country out of the U.S., you may write about it. Here are some ideas of what to look for. For example, Florida’s first penitentiary was created in a military arsenal in 1866 in Chattahoochee. In 1876, the same institution became a Florida State Mental Hospital.
Once you select a state, then see what you can find regarding that state, such as when the first jail or prison was established in the state, the oldest jail, historical practices, the first warden, how policies in that state have changed over the years, etc. Bring us some facts and information.
Part 2::
Check out this website, Incarceration in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incarceration_in_the_United_States), as it is full of information. Look it over and post ONE or TWO items that you think are important for your classmates to understand when studying prisons and prison populations. Then explain why you selected the information that you did. Some questions to think about are: It is a trend that can be reversed? Or information that we can use to change the way we do things inside prisons?
