the Securities and Exchange Commission
Paper instructions:
I need the following questions answered. Please put the answers under each question.
1. What is the Securities and Exchange Commission? How does it affect financial decision-making? What constraints might it put on a company?
2. What role do auditors play in ensuring financials filed with the SEC are accurate?
3. When is a private organization required to disclose financial information? What role do companies like Dun and Bradstreet and LexisNexis play in helping organizations evaluate private companies they do business with?
4. What is a multinational corporation? What are some constraints facing today’s multinational corporations? Predict how joint ventures and international mergers might address those constraints.
5. Imagine you are starting a business in Brazil, Russia, and China. What are some risk factors that are country specific? What are some risk factors related to emerging markets?
6. Let’s think about the value of the USD versus the Chinese Yuan. The issue in this situation is that China pegs the value of its currency to the USD versus the EUR or GBP which allows their currency to float. This means the Chinese government is artificially maintaining the value of the currency to make their goods cheaper in other countries such as the US.
If China allowed their currency to float, the value of their currency would appreciate and we would see far fewer “made in China” stickers. One way to find out if a currency is under or overvalued is the “Big Mac” test. You can take the value of the Big Mac in the US and then use a website like www.oanda.com to convert it to the currency in another country. Then find out how much the Big Mac actually costs in other countries. What can you find when you compare China and the US?
