After selecting an author and a major work from this author, you will write a very short essay that explores the author and the authors historical context. The purpose of this essay is to uncover information about the context in which the piece was written. Not only historical events (i.e. Civil War) affect meaning but also the authors position in that historical context. Race, class and gender unfortunately determine questions of access and can also alter how one views an historical event. A woman of color (non white) would most likely have had a vastly different understanding of i.e. 1950s American than a white male. By uncovering the historical and biographical background of your author, you will be in a much better position to analyze both the author and his or her work.
