Engineering and Construction Automotive Engineering- Brake System
Project description
Project Report
Select a sub-system or component from the brake system of the motor vehicle. Develop a model and analyse its operational behaviour. Identify the limitations and using the lecture and research material, change the features of the sub-system or component to overcome the identified limitations.
The model can be real or virtual.
Document all the findings at each phase to create your report.
Report has to be in technical report writing format as explained at the end of this document.
This task covers learning outcomes: 1, 2 & 3
Communication skills being of primary importance is the ability to communicate your ideas or findings to others and is as important as the knowledge itself.
The purpose of a technical report is to convey information factually, briefly and clearly. Clarity is achieved by subdividing the report into headed sections each with a definite part to play.
Structure of a Technical Report: There are four main parts to any report, and each of these has a different purpose:
Summary
Introduction
Core
Conclusions
Summary: In as few words as possible the summary, which will head up the report.
Introduction: The material which you are about to present in the main body of the report must be set in context. Questions, which the reader will ask, include:
• Why is this work being presented?
• Where does it fit in with Automotive Engineering?
• How does it relate to other work in the field?
• What are the aims and objectives of the project?
5
Core: This will be the main part of the report and provide all of the results and discussions, which someone who wished to examine the work in detail would require. It would include:
• Theory
• Experimental method
• Results
• Discussion
Conclusions: Should give key findings of the work. It should be closely relate to the objectives, which were stated in the introduction.
References: These will be by the information sheets supplied as hand outs and will comply with the APA system of referencing. (Refer to the referencing guide provided) Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of learning the student will be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills and understanding at Level 5 relating to:
1. Types of brake systems and their operating principles.
2. Components of brakes and driver assistance systems.
3. Interaction among road surface, tyres, brakes and suspension
