Note 1: The length of the critique report will be between 700 to 1,400 words plus (optional) up to 2 exhibits/tables in
support of your points. These exhibits/tables could be based on the materials covered in our sessions and/or other
references to reinforce your position.
Note 2: A critique is a report that gives a critical assessment of an article. I do not want a report where the facts are just
being re-stated, rather a well thought out report reviewing, analysing and evaluating the research paper. The following is a
guideline that could be helpful in preparing your critique (I will follow this guideline when marking your report):
STEPS
Begin by reading the article and annotate as you read.
• Note the author’s main point/thesis statement.
• Divide the article into sections of thought and write a brief summary of each thought in your own words.
SUMMARY
• Summarize the author’s purpose and main points/evidence cited that are used for back up.
REVIEW, ANALYZE & EVALUATE*
To critically review the article, ask the following questions**:
• Was the evidence used by the author accurate?
• What questions were not answered in the article and what requires deeper future analysis?
• Does the author’s use and interpretation of this evidence lead the reader to the same conclusion?
• Did the author build a logical argument?
• Is there other evidence that would support your point(s)?
• Was the author successful in making his point?
• Did the conclusion satisfy the audience?
*Ensure you review, analyze & evaluate the important sections of the article (eg. Motivations, benefits, barriers etc.).
Please note I only gave you a few examples of important sections, but there are many more sections to review, analyze &
evaluate. Please feel free to use other resources (eg. Other resource papers, articles, books etc.) to build upon your
analysis if required. Ensure that you properly cite your resources.
**Ensure when you write your report that you do not just answer the questions stated below. The questions below are
more to guide you towards critically reviewing, analyzing & evaluating the research paper. I require a critical review of
the research paper.
CONCLUSION
• Stating whether you agree or disagree with the author.
• Back up your decisions by stating your reasons.
• Give a general opinion of the work.
