The government’s role in Residential Schools in Canada
Paper instructions:
SUPPORTING IDEAS:
The Canadian government’s reasoning of establishing residential schools
The affect that the government’s decision had on aboriginal people and their families
what did the government do to fix the damage that happened
EVIDENCE:
Supporting idea #1_The Canadian government believed it was responsible for educating and caring for the country’s aboriginal people. It thought their best chance for success was to learn English and adopt christianity and Canadian customs.
Residential Schools were established with the assumption that aboriginal culture was unable to adopt to a rapidly modernizing society. It was believed that native children would be more successful if they assimilated into mainstream Canadian society.
Supporting idea #2_Students lived in substandard conditions and endured physical and emotional abuse. There are also many allegations of sexual abuse.
When students returned to the reserves, they often found they didn’t belong.
Children growing up in conditions of suppressed identity and abuse tend eventually to experience psychological and emotional problems.
Supporting idea #3_the government now recognizes that the consequences of the indian residential schools are negative.
The Canadian government formed the truth and reconciliation Commission (TRC) as part of the court-approved Residential Schools Agreement that was negotiated between legal counsel for former students, legal counsel for the churches, the government of Canada, the Assembly of First Nations and other aboriginal organizations.
Compensation called Common Experience Payment was made available to residential schools students.
An Independent Assessment Process (IAP), was set up to address sexual abuse cases and serious incidents of physical abuse.
