Instructions for Week 10 annotation

After reading week 10 notes and watching the clips and reading articles (links in d2L course content module):

1) After reading the notes about cultural capital and habitus, pick one concept, define it, and share your opinion of that concept/theory by discussing it academically. Does it make sense? Have you seen it in real life?

2) After watching the video clips on “Corridor of Shame,” and Marian Wright Edelman’s video clip from her speech on Child Poverty, spend a paragraph summarizing the problem . This is just a summary paragraph.

3) Scan the information in week 10 notes on the charts and info I included on school funding. Explain what you observed from those charts (patterns, basic info.)

4 ) Click the link “School Funding Encyclopedia” entry. Explain your understanding of the problems in school funding, according to this article, and how they create unequal educational experiences for America’s students.

5) Go to the Funding Gaps material and only pages 1 through 4 are necessary. Demonstrate an accurate understanding of school funding by choosing a state, on page 3 of this report, and explain what the data means related to the state you chose, beginning with Table 1. For example, the article used Maryland as an example and reported that (bottom of p. 2) Maryland had fewer poor children than Arkansas but received 51% more Title I aid per poor child. Explain what Table 2 means and how the state you chose fared.

6) Still working from the Funding Gaps 2006 report (beginning on page 2) what reforms does the author of the article “How the federal government makes rich states richer” propose? State the reforms and your opinion of those suggestions.

7) Summarize and share your thought s on the Washington Post article on the comparison of two schools- Feb 2011.
8) View the You tube video on Cesar Chavez schools and write a short paragraph maybe 15 words to explain what the school is like and any comments you have):
