1. Describe one similarity and one difference between each of the following: 1) the Spartan and Athenian assemblies; 2) the Spartan and Athenian councils.

2. Briefly describe two immediate and three long term effects/results of the Peloponnesian War.

3. Briefly describe two political strengths of Pericles and provide an example for each strength from the events leading up to the Peloponnesian War or the war itself.

4. Briefly describe how the Parthenon was the architectural embodiment of the characteristics of Athens and the Athenians as depicted in Pericles’ Funeral Oration.

Part Two: Essay (45 points)
Choose one of the questions below to answer. Make sure that you answer the question completely in a well-organized, coherent essay. Your essay should be about 4-5 paragraphs in length.

1. Sources like Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War and Plutarch’s Life of Pericles explore the possibility that Pericles, by the impression of his powers of persuasion, resembled/acted like a tyrant. Do you think this is true? Why or why not?
Important note: You MUST choose yes or no and defend your choice with three well explained reasons with examples. You will not be graded on what side you choose but how well you defend your choice. In other words, I will consider either option justified.

2. In his introduction, Thucydides states that he believes the Peloponnesian War was the defining moment in Greek history and many modern historians agree with his assessment. However others argue that the Persian Wars were Greece’s defining moment. Is Thucydides justified in saying that the Peloponnesian Wars were the most important or do you believe that it was the Persian Wars? Why?
Important Note: You MUST choose a side – the Persian Wars or the Peloponnesian Wars and defend your choice with three reasons. You will not be graded on what side you choose but how well you defend your choice. In other words, I will consider either option (Persian Wars or Peloponnesian War) justified.

3. You are either a Mytilenian, a Plataean, or a Melian. Write a speech that will persuade the power camped outside your walls not to destroy your city. Use aspects of Pericles’ Funeral Oration within your argument.
