Project Instructions
You will explore the functioning of a state legislature or an interest group. Because you will be using sources other than your textbook, you will need to include a list of references with your essay. Refer to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, which may be accessed online or in many libraries.
State Legislatures
Select a bill from a state legislature that you think is important. In a three-to-five page (900–1500 word) essay, discuss the bill’s progress through the legislature. Be sure to note the state and bill about which you are writing at the start of your paper.
Use the journals and proceedings of your state’s legislature as the basis for your paper. These records are available in many libraries, as well as online. Also, newspapers and local news programs may be helpful. Be sure to cite each source that you use. Your essay should discuss the following points:
• An explanation of the bill and its proposed measures.
• The significance of the bill (how its measures affect the state).
• A summary of discussion and debate about the bill (arguments for and against it, proposed revisions, etc.).
• The eventual fate of the bill, including the reasons for its success or failure.
Your paper will be graded according to the following criteria:
• An explanation of the bill. (ten points)
• The significance of the bill. (ten points)
• A summary of discussion about the bill. (ten points)
• Explanation of the bill’s passage or failure. (ten points)
• Few errors in grammar, spelling, and punctuation; all sources cited in APA style. (ten points)
