In this discussion, you will create a data review of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cancer statistics obtained from the United States Cancer Statistics online WONDER database.

Review the following screen cast demos presented by Dr. James Koziol, Full-Time Faculty member in the Department of Health Administration:

To begin, access the HealthData.gov website and follow the instructions below:
1. Click on the Data tab at the top left area of the website.

2. Next, click the Epidemiology link under “Filter by Subject” on the left-hand navigation of the website.

3. Scroll down on the main webpage under “Search Results,” and click on the heading link for the CDC WONDER: Cancer Statistics.

4. Click the Query Tool link in the green “Download the Data” box to download the data.

5. In the top “Current Cancer Statistics” section, click the Data Request link under the second heading “Cancer Incidence 1999-2000.”

6. Under the “Organize Table Layout” section, you can group data by various variables. Scroll through the variables offered and select two of these variables to utilize for your data. Be sure to explore the various options, to determine which are the most informative for you. When you post your discussion response, you will summarize your data using the variables you selected. For example, you might choose Cancer Site and Sex when looking for gender differences or you might select Year if you’re interested in time trends.

7. You should also select Age Adjusted Rates. See Merrill’s discussion in Chapter 3 of the course text on standardized rates.

8. Next, under “Select Location,” choose the state in which you currently reside.

9. Further, under the “Year and Demographics” section, select All Years and leave all other options as “All” (e.g., All ages, All ethnicities, All races, etc.).

10. Under “Select cancers of interest”, select All Sites.

11. Lastly, under “Other options,” check the Show Totals box and ensure the 2000 U.S. Std. Million is chosen for the “Population for Age-Adjusted Rates” section.

12. Click Send and view the data. It may be easier to read the data in Excel. Follow the steps given below to export from the HealthData.gov website into an Excel file.

13. Repeat the above steps, however in Step #5 under the “Current Cancer Statistics” section, click the Data Request link under the second heading “Cancer Mortality 1999-2010,” then complete the remaining steps.

14. In addition, from the Results page, you may click on the Chart option, for a visual representation of the data you had requested. This may help you interpret your findings.

After reviewing the data results, address the following in your discussion post:
• Summarize the data for the two variables that you selected for your data output in your state (Step #6 above). In your summary, list the top three cancers for your state and discuss the counts and age adjusted mortality rate for each cancer.

• What can be deduced from the data results as they relate to cancer incidence and mortality from 1999-2008? Are there any trends?

• Are there differences by gender?

• Is any specific type of cancer more prevalent than others?

• Assume the role of a health administrator and assess the data based on your interpretation of the relative importance of incidence and mortality. How would you summarize the burden of cancer in your state?

• Consider the role data plays in assessing the health of the overall population. In your opinion, what impact does the data bring to this assessment?

Your response must be at least 250 words. You must utilize at least one scholarly source that was published within the last five years (excluding the textbook) and is cited according to APA format. Post your dataset by uploading your Excel file (.xls or .xlsx) to the discussion forum using the attachment icon (the paper clip with the “Add/Remove” link) at the bottom of the discussion response screen.

To export your file from HealthData.gov, click the Export button in the top right-hand corner of the query results page. Save the file to your computer, it will save to your “Downloads” folder. Open Excel, click File, and then Open. Locate your “Downloads” folder. It may be within your “My Documents” folder. Select the “Files of type” as Text Files, then select the file you saved, (it will be listed by the file name you gave it in Step #8) and click Open. Ensure Delimited is selected, and then click Next. Tab should be selected under “Delimiters.” Then, click Next. Lastly, General should be selected. Then, click Finish. Your data will display in Excel. Save the Excel file as “firstname_lastname_cancerquery” in a location on your computer where you can find it.
