Assignment Specification – Weighting 20%

General guidelines

Coursework 2 shall consist of a formal report of an investigation into a public limited company (PLC). The report will present research into the company. The company will preferably be an advanced technology company. The relevant part of the syllabus is (from the module specification): –

•    Project Management and Finance: techniques for managing projects, introduction to basic techniques for financial accounting in engineering companies.

You are required to research topics in terms of the management structure and financial statements and take a closer look at one company, of your choice, in particular.

You are required to produce a cash flow analysis based on cash inflow and outflow to determine the health of the company, whether it is expanding or contracting.

The report should clearly describe the following:

A)    Nature/type of business: how it operates, its key products and markets , its key customers
B)    How project management might be used in the company operations
C)    Company structure/Organisation chart with the names and roles of the key directors
D)    Provide examples of financial statements: profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow for the company and describe the purpose of each statement.
E)    Cash flow analysis based on cash inflow and outflow:
a.    Is direct or indirect presentation of the cash flow used?
b.    Based on investing is the company expanding or contracting?
c.    Based on financing is the company changing in the size and composition?

Before embarking on the detailed work you are also required to produce an outline plan and schedule. The following structure is strongly advised: –

Title page.
Contents (one page),
Acknowledgements and declaration of any collaboration (one page)
Summary (one page).
1. Introduction and background.
2. Aims and objectives, planning, scheduling and management of the investigation.
3. Critical literature review
4. A case study – ABC Ltd.
5. Discussion and conclusions.
6. References.
7. Bibliography.
8.Appendices

3.2 Completeness
The report shall include all aspects of the investigation, from concept through planning, execution and completion with recommendations for further work. It shall be mostly management/commercial in content but may also include a technical perspective (e.g. the role of major technological developments in strategic planning). The appendices may contain detail which is relevant and sufficiently important, but would otherwise hinder the coherence of the main body. e.g. company financial data and your cash flow forecast spreadsheet etc. Only charts should be included in the main body of the report.

3.3 Title page and contents page (5%)
The title page shall include University of Huddersfield, International Study Centre etc., module title and number, date, an appropriate picture, a fully comprehensive and relevant title (or main title and subtitle), contents page with section numbering and page numbering.

3.4 Summary (300 – 500 original words, 10%)
The summary shall set the context and summarise the key content of the report including conclusions. Do not simply describe or list the content – summarise it (i.e. restate the main parts of the report, in brief).

3.5 Introduction and background (300 – 500 original words plus referenced copies 20%)
This section shall include relevant, interesting and engaging content. The subsection structure shall be clear, logical and purposeful. Significant content may be copied from sources but must be quoted and/or referenced, Harvard style.

3.6 Aims and objectives, planning, scheduling and management of the project (300 – 500 words, 15%)
This section shall include, clearly stated, the original aims, objectives, an outline plan, with a brief description of the work required and a schedule. The plan shall be summarised in tabular form with columns for task description, estimated time to complete and actual time to complete. The schedule shall also be in tabular form with columns for task description, week number, planned deadlines and actual completion dates. A subsection shall explain how and when the investigation and report writing was managed (e.g. progress monitoring).

3.8 Critical literature review (300 – 500 original words plus referenced copies, 10%)
Source material shall be subject to critical evaluation (degree of relevance, reliability and quality). This section shall demonstrate the use of appropriate methods of research.

3.9 A case study (mainly data plus 200 – 500 original words plus referenced copies, 20%)
The results of your investigation into a particular company shall be presented here, with brief descriptions and explanations to demonstrate your understanding of management, commercial and finance issues relevant to the particular company. Tables of raw data may be relegated to the appendices, with a link or reference. There may be need for some discussion within this section but this must also be duplicated or covered in some way in the discussion /conclusions section.

3.10 Discussion and conclusions (300 – 1000 original words, 20%)
This section shall demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of management, commercial and finance issues in the broadest context. This section shall also contain evidence which demonstrates a commitment to learning, scholarship and personal development through reflection on the experience.
