Paper instructions:
William Penn called his colony a “holy experiment.” Chronicle the development of Pennsylvania, with particular attention to the advantages that the colony offered to settlers. What liberties were guaranteed and to whom? Be sure to include in your response information from the primary source documents.

Things to consider:
The length requirement for this essay is a minimum of 4 typed pages and a maximum of 5 typed pages (double spaced, 12 font, and one inch margins all around) or between 1000-1200 words. I will not read anything under 4 pages nor anything beyond 5 pages. I am very strict about the page number rule.

You do not need to make formal citations for the papers, as you will ONLY be allowed to use the sources provided to you. DO NOT conduct independent research for this paper! A simple parenthetical citation with the book(s) you used and the page number will be sufficient. Example: (Document Name/Author) (Foner, p. 86) No bibliographies, footnotes, endnotes, or works cited pages will be necessary. Again, sources used outside of the ones given are prohibited and will result in an F if used.

Read ALL of the required texts for the topic and make sure that your paper clearly shows that you have read the relevant materials. You must cite all quotes, paraphrases and all other information taken from the texts.

You must use specific dates and have an accurate chronology.

This paper should be a detailed analysis of the sources. This is not a report that just summarizes general points or general background information.

Proofread your paper!

Do not use block quotes.

Watch your tenses! If it happened in the past, use the past tense.

Avoid using first person “I” statements.

Always follow your quotes and citations with analysis in your own words.

Avoid the passive voice.

Cover pages with original titles will be required. Include your name, section day(s) and times. The cover will not count toward the overall length of the paper.

History essays require that you have an introduction with a thesis statement. A body with evidence supporting your thesis (mostly primary source documents), and a conclusion which ties your analysis together. Your grade will be severely compromised if one of these components is lacking. I strongly advise you to come see me or go to the Mount San Antonio College Writing Center if you have any questions about how to write a thesis, or if you want me to look over drafts. Extra points will be offered to those who make an effort to visit the Writing Center for assistance.

Paper Grading Scale:

An A paper will be well written. There will be few mechanical errors. Paragraph structure will be correct. The paper will have an introduction which will contain a thesis statement or a statement of purpose, a main body consisting of paragraphs supporting the thesis set forth in the introduction, and a conclusion which will sum up the main points and restate and confirm the thesis. The thesis will be original and well supported. There will be no significant errors or omissions in facts or dates. The papers will have body paragraphs each explaining how the thesis is supported by that particular fact.

A B paper will like an A paper but it may have more than a few mechanical errors. There may be some minor errors or the absence of important facts or dates. Some paragraphs may have only one sentence or may be too long. The paper may be a little vague or general in places. Thesis may not be well developed or supported. The paragraphs explaining how the facts support the thesis may not explain them well, or there may be only a few facts supporting the thesis.

A C paper will bear no resemblance to a college level paper. There maybe numerous factual errors or the absence of dates altogether. Several paragraphs may need to be restructured. There may be many mechanical errors or the English use may be barely comprehensible. The thesis statement may not be clear; the body of the paper, and/or its conclusion may not follow and support it. The paper overall may be general and unfocused. The paper may be somewhat brief. The paper may not explain how the facts support the thesis or explain the topic in very general terms. The paper may have a sparse amount of facts supporting the thesis.

A D paper may have fabrications and invention as well as errors and omissions. Mechanical errors may be very frequent. The English may be intelligible. There may be no thesis statement. The thesis statement may be totally unsupported. The paper has incomplete, inaccurate, or very vague explanations of how the facts support the thesis. The paper may be very brief and/or very general. The paper may lack a conclusion, may be unoriginal, or may have no facts supporting the thesis.

An F paper will not be submitted in typed form. It could be less than the 4 page minimum. It might not meet the margin and font requirements. It could be plagiarized, or not written in proper English.
