Research Paper 25%

For this third essay I want to see you develop a topic that will, hopefully, help you somewhere along the road. The basic assignment is to take a controversy or an issue in your given field, major or profession and discuss it. This does not mean you produce abortion papers because it’s a medical issue; it isn’t, it’s a cultural one. However you can write a paper on medical insurance companies and their effect on the medical profession. If you’re going into a business major talk about something specific to your field; if Biology, you can discuss ethics in experimental procedures; if English, then talk about the fact that there are too many bodies and not enough jobs:) and so on. Use full MLA citation procedure. Proofread carefully; more than 3 sentence-level errors and I reserve the right to drop you a full grade.

During the course of the paper…
— Come up with a clear definition of the field/profession. Then be clear about the controversy you address. Don’t feel like you have to answer it. You can propose solutions, but the more complicated the controversy the easier it is for you to produce 7-10 pages on it. Use an argumentative structure, think how your arguments can be made ethical, factual or emotional. You’re not going to call them that in the paper but identifying them like that will help you articulate them.
— Use at least 6 sources. 4 of these must be print: journals, books or magazines. You can use as many others as you like, but no more than two web sources.

Grades:
I’ll grade your paper in three categories: content, organization and mechanics.

1)“Content” refers to the originality and depth of your ideas, the appropriateness of the evidence you use to illustrate and support them, the clarity with which you present your basic assumptions, the degree of difficulty for the task you set yourself, etc. Perhaps the most important factor here is the strength of your ‘controversy’; it is so important because the value of the rest of the argument depends on it.

2)“Organization” deals with the fulfillment of the logical steps that every successful argument takes. You can use the Toulmin, or Aristotelean models for ease of organization or come with your own priorities; it doesn’t matter. Note that a good performance in and understanding of this category will tend to deepen and clarify your “content;” conversely, good ideas are easily undermined by bad (or last minute) organization.

3)“Mechanics” which I’m sure you, along with every other language-wielding person, hate, refers to the nuts and bolts of writing: sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, spelling, paragraphing, transitions, appearance, etc. My rationale in using mechanics to compute your grade is this: at this point in your career as writers, people expect good mechanics of you. You don’t get kudos for it, but you get frowned on if it ain’t there. Life.
