Paper instructions:
1) Watch the film
“The Wild Bunch” (1969) (Western)

It’s highly recommended that your watch the film multiple time.

2) Write a 3-4page paper on the film.

Include five of the following in your analysis.

– What was/were specific the objective(s) of the character played by your actor in specific scenes? How might the actor have approached this/these objective(s)? How did the actor play the objectives? What obstacles were encountered by the character and what actions were taken?

– What types of conflicts did the character encounter? (i.e. Man vs. Man, Man vs. Nature, Man vs. Self, Man vs. Society, Man vs. Technology, Man vs. Fate, etc.) Describe the conflicts. How might the actor have approached these conflicts as a character? What about the performance, specifically, dramatized these conflicts?

– Was the character a willing or reluctant hero? How did the actor help portray this?

– What specific relationships (emotionally and psychologically) were portrayed between the characters and how might the respective actors have invested in those relationships?

– How did the actor help deliver the style or genre of the film and/or theme of the film in a truthful or effective way? Be specific about the performance.

3) Your paper may also include any of the following elements we discussed in class as all or part of your required five areas of analysis: protagonist, antagonist, hero, antihero, archetypes, punch line, straight (wo)man, realism, formalism, character tests, environment, blocking, moment to moment, imaging, pivot point, ordinary world vs. special world, etc. Be sure to illustrate your points with specific examples of the performance.

4) You are required to notate the time in the movie of the scenes you refer to 9i.e. 20:00 or 20 mins, etc.).

5) Refrain from writing about the plot of the film as this will result in the lowering of your score.
6) This is not a research paper. Material about the film you may find in other books or on the Internet may be interesting but will ultimately be inappropriate for the purpose of this assignment and will lower your score.

7) Please understand the difference between the terms “actor” and “character” when writing your essay.

8) Electronic evaluation by University staff may be used on your paper to help prevent plagiarism.
