DO PRISONS WORK?

In recent years the number of people in prison has risen considerably and this trend shows no real sign of stopping. This raises questions over why the figures are rising and whether prison `works`.

In asking if prison `works`, it needs to be determined from which perspective the question is being asked. Is it from societal discourse in general, victims of crime, politicians, the Prison Service, or indeed from the perspective of prisoners and ex prisoners? This essay will attempt to take a holistic approach to this question, as so many factors come into play which appears to have a significant interdependency.
