For years social scientists have sought to explain and give reasons for social order and disorder. However, if one is to believe the media then modern society is a society that is broken beyond repair. Newspaper headlines scream of anti-social behaviour, crime waves and lawlessness. This essay will look at two studies carried out by Stanley Cohen and Stuart Hall et al. which set out to explain the role of the media in defining disorder. It will begin by defining social order before going on to look at the differing views of Cohen and Hall et al. and comparing the similarities and differences of each approach.
