Abstract
The aim of this experiment was to look at whether automatic processes have an effect on controlled processes by using a variation of the Stroop effect. Previous studies found that it was more difficult to name the colour of the ink a colour-word word was written in, compared to a colour-neutral word therefore taking longer to give a response. This is because the automatic processes had an effect on the controlled processes. In the current experiment the nature of the words was manipulated for the colour-neutral and colour-related conditions. The results showed that the nature of the words had an effect on the participants response time providing further support for theories that believe, in certain situations automatic processes can inhibit controlled processes
