Part 1 – This essay will analysis two newspaper extract, one from The New York Times and the other from The New York Post. The reports are on the disappearance of the American soldier Private Bowe Bergdahl from his unit during his mission in Afghanistan on the 30th June 2009. The essay will discuss how language is used in the reports to create a particular perspective on events. First it will discuss how grammatical structure and vocabulary is used to communicate the writers point of view. Next it will consider how the register of language is used in journalism as a profession as an identity marker. Finally it will look at who provided accounts of the event and how reliable they were and how the writers choice of evidence backed up their point of view.
