In the 1970s the cultural theorist Stuart Hall and his colleagues and the sociologist Stanley Cohen developed theories surrounding their concerns as to whether news reports from various media sources on the subject of social disorder and antisocial behaviour would create public panic amongst society. Concentrating on their ideas this essay will begin by examining both studies and defining the similarities and differences between them both. It will also examine why our media sources exaggerate stories of social disorder which inevitably creates unfounded fear and unrest in society as media sources have a very powerful role in how they depict anti-social behaviour and the exaggerated stories can cause conflict.
