The government describes a career as ‘someone who looks after a relative, friend or neighbour, who needs support because of their sickness, age or disability’. (directgov.uk, 2006) The term carer is used for those who are in a caring position. Those who care as a profession are known as care workers or care professionals. In the case of family carers they are unpaid, but do have the option to apply for carers allowance, if they meet a certain criteria. Throughout this essay I will be focusing on the case study of Ann Walker and Angus Mcphail, and their experiences of being the carer and the cared for. Ann is a 37 year old mother to Zoe, wife to husband Bob and stepdaughter to Angus. Angus is 79 years old and suffers from Parkinsons Disease, an illness that results in loss of brain cells in the parts of the brain that control the body’s movements.
