Mandatory schooling was introduced in England for all children aged 5 years in 1872.  Samuel Wilderspin influenced the majority of the educational systems within schools.  Children were expected to sit still in large groups from the age of 5 and were educated mainly by men, as women were thought of as weak and unable to discipline such large groups of children (Bruce, 2008).

In the late 1800s more and more middle class children were being taught at home by their mothers.  The mothers were teaching their children by using the approach of the German educationalist Frederick Froebel (1782-1852) (Bruce, 2008).
