Part 2 – Read the following passage from Marlowes Doctor Faustus. What does this scene tell us about Faustuss state of mind? Pay particular attention to Marlowes use of language.

The scene shows Faustus in a mixed state of mind. He appears to have reached a low point in his life and is in despair of the mercy of God. He feels like he is forever cursed and cannot be saved and decides to put his trust in Beelzebub instead.

Faustus appears to be going through an inner spiritual struggle between trusting God or the devil and at times he hesitates, trying to remind himself to stay steadfast and to focus on his main goal which is attaining power and knowledge. This is clear when he tells himself to go not backward and to be resolute (Marlowe, 2:1, ll.6).

Faustuss inner struggle between morality and immorality is shown when the Good Angel and Bad Angel appear and they attempt to convince him of which path to take and the rewards of taking that path.
