Learning Outcome 1 – Freud and Erickson propose two different theories of sexual development, Freuds theory of psychosexual development and Eriksons psychosocial theory. Both theories propose that development takes place in stages that are resolved (at least to some extent) before moving onto the next.
Freuds theory suggests that persons sexual life does not begin with puberty rather that it is something that starts from a very young age and drives our behaviours as we aim to seek sexual gratification. The idea of sexual gratification refers to a sensual pleasure, the theory proposes that the site of sensual pleasure moves as an individual grows up taking a person through five psychosexual stages.
