In what way is Seven (Fincher, 1995) typical of the noir/crime genre and how does it subvert typical noir conventions?

In this essay, I am going to analyse Seven and its neo-noir genre conventions.

The film is an American thriller and also features hybrid genres and typical conventions of neo-noir, horror, crime and action through genre iconography. The films main genre is easy to establish as there is many action, thriller conventions such as the setting is in a downtown apartment possibly set in New York although we never really get a proper indication of the setting except from New York pizza in the diner but the audience assume by the urban surroundings and recognition of the yellow cabs that the film is set in New York. Also,  police sirens and the use of guns are used throughout, it is also clear that the film is of a crime genre as police jargon dialogue is used, the main protagonists dress code is stereotypical of an inspector (fedora hat, long coat), black and white Polaroi…(short extract)
