Rubbish can be described as an unwanted object or material that no longer has any significant value to the owner; it is created every second of every day by homes, shops and industry and what happens to it is something most people do not think about after it has left their home or business. However, something that is valueless to one person may become valuable to another. This essay will cover how we became a consumer society, what influenced the changes and whether this way of life is sustainable into the future. It will look at rising affluence, mass consumption, the increased volume of waste and the environmental effects and discuss how they are connected and influenced by each other.
