The question of which character is to be blamed for the tragedy in Shakespeares Hamlet, is a long standing debate, mainly because it is difficult to isolate one characters action as a sole catalyst for all the tragedy that ensues. Therefore it is more reasonable to examine the characters relationships on a wider scale and try to study the bigger picture in terms of motifs, such as the role of the significance of family and kinship, which is heightened because of the traditionally religious and royal background of the play.
