Criticise Piagets Theory of Development.

Jean Piaget is noted for his research into cognitive development in children from birth to adolescence.  His informal experiments with children looked at how a childs cognitive processes alter during its growth.  He followed the assumption that development in cognitive processes was a result from adaptation to the childs environment.  This adaptation, according to Piaget, came in the form of two processes; assimilation and accommodation.  The first is how a child interprets new experiences, and the second is the alteration of existing schemas to fit with new experiences.  Piagets research led him to conclude four stages of development during the life of a person.  In order to criticise his theories, we must first look at what these four stages consist of….(short extract)
