It has been hypothesised that it is possible for individuals to engage in two forms of memory processing which have been given the terms explicit and implicit memory. Explicit memory requires conscious intent on the part of the rememberer; conversely implicit memory has been described as memory that is revealed when performance is facilitated in the absence of conscious recollection of the event itself (Graf, Schacter, 1985) and memory without awareness (Schacter, 1996).
