The third principle upon which the National Health Service is based upon is Equality. Bevan back in 1948 set out to make this the most important principle of all. He said that one of the purposes of the National Health Service was to provide people of Great Britain, no matter where they may be, with the same level of service. One of the main assumptions is that, because medical services are special and because disease and illness can strike down rich and poor alike, they should not be available only to those who can afford them or who live close to them, rather everyone should have equal access as of right.
