Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832) argued for the principle of utility by which he meant that an action should be judged according to the results that it achieved. This approach to ethics is called utilitarianism and it has been one of the most influential ethical theories over the past few centuries.

Utilitarianism is a teleological approach to ethics. It is a moral theory. The most common definition used to describe utilitarianism is the greatest good for the greater number. However, this concept may be argued in more than one way.

In this essay I shall be explaining in some depth the main forms of utilitarianism: Act Utilitarianism and Rule Utilitarianism. I will be expressing the advantages and disadvantages of each form and will be considering their strengths and weaknesses.
