Do the Right Thing (1989)

Spike Lee’sDo the Right Thing(1989) explores many social problems – racism, gaps between the generations, sexual & gender roles, and others. Choose one of the following essay topics and attempt to prove how Lee’s decisions as a filmmaker serve to stir political debate between him and the viewer.

1) Focus on a single formal element (i.e. music, camera movement, editing, etc.) and explore its function in Do the Right Thing. Consider any of the following questions to get you started:
– What is thiselement’s function in the overall film? How is it motivated? Why?
– Are anyformal patterns repeated throughout the film? Are we asked to compare elements? If so, how and at what points?
– How does the use of this element progress throughout the film? More specifically, how does a comparison of the beginning and ending reveal the overall function of this element?

2) Choose a single character from Do the Right Thing and examine how his/her narrative is presented. Consider any of the following questions to get you started:
– Which story events does Lee directly present in the plot? Which must we only infer? Why?
– Are there any other characters that have parallel or opposing storylines? Why does Lee include these other characters?
– Does the ending present a clear-cut conclusion for your character or is his/her storyline left open?

To be clear: you don’t have to answer all of the questions following the prompts. They are only there to help you formulate your own clearly stated thesis which you will prove with concrete examples from the film.
