(1) (20 marks – 500 words) Martin believes that one of the strong themes to
emerge from his early interviews with the mothers is that they feel that the closure
will lead to a loss of a sense of community. Read the transcript of Martin’s
interview with Dianne. Code the transcript and identify two – three key concepts
emerging from your coding. What evidence can you find from that interview that
supports Martin’s conclusion? Should he consider an alternative theme? If so, what
would you suggest? Justify your response with reference to the Kingston Data, the
Reading Guide, and Chapter 9 of your text.
(2) (30 marks – 2000 words) The issue you are investigating is the mothers’
perspective of the impact of closing a rural school. Has the school closure decision
and action had an impact on the community living in and around Kingston, and if so,
what is the nature of this impact?
Format of Assignment 2
• A 500 word interpretation of ‘Diannes interview’ as per the guiding questions
stated in (1) above. The 500 words will be supported by your coding of Janice’s
interview. The coding can be presented in tabular form, or as a transcript using
colour, underlining, italics, or margin notes to highlight text (the evidence) to
justify your codes.
• A 2000 word (maximum) summary and justification of the selected evidence
relating to the impact of the school closure. This will include your analysis of all
the interview data plus your additional selected data sources (e.g. newspaper
articles, field notes, memos).
• Two appendices as listed below. The appendices will mostly consist of data
analysis.
Attachments
You are expected to include 2 (two) appendices clearly illustrating the
knowledge gained from analysis of Martin’s data. Each appendix must provide a
new concept, provide accurate results and clear evidence of your analysis
processes.
The two appendices will include:
I. A conceptual model of how mothers feel about the closure. The model is
informed by your analysis of Martin’s data.
II. An appendix of your choice. Below are some suggestions, but these are not
exhaustive.
– A content analysis of newspaper articles
– A timeline of the key events surrounding the closure decision and
subsequent school changes. This could be linked to the different data collection
points and used to explain degree of impact
Organising the contents of Assignment 2
The assignment should contain the following items:
• A table of contents (which includes the appendices);
• A 500 word interview analysis;
• Evidence of your data coding (table, marked transcript)
• A 2000 word summary of the evidence relating to the impact of the school
closure, justifying your interpretation and selected themes; and
• Two appendices.
Standard of Assignment 2
The presentation of your 500 word interpretation and your 2000 word summary
must be of a very high standard. You should write them as though you were
submitting for publication. Marks will be deducted for errors of spelling,
grammar or syntax.
Claims made must be well justified by the analysis evidence presented in the
summary and in the appendices.
Submission of Assignment 2
Only electronic submissions are required in only WORD format (.doc or docx)
and should be a single file. While a cover sheet is not required make sure your
assignment has your name, student number, contact phone number and email
address on it. Email your assignment (file: your name – unit) from your
student email address to g.campbell_evans@ecu.edu.au
