For this essay, you will watch the movie Exit Through the Gift Shop. You will then write a three- to four-page paper in which you analyze the theme of the movieand how the theme is developed through the structure and events of the movie. One way to approach this paper is to analyze the theme of the movie based on its relationship to advertising and the ideas of adcult espoused by Twitchell in his essay “But First a Word from Our Sponsor,” the ideas espoused by Michael Sandel in What Money Can’t Buy, or both. For example, you could take one idea from Twitchell’s essay, like how advertising creates the meaning and value of products and discuss how it is related to the events in Exit. You could also discuss a variety of topics related to adcult and how the movie is related to them. You might discuss the movie, for example, as a parody of adcult or talk about the similarities of the art and artists to advertising, whatever topic you choose. Some questions you might think of to help you develop a topic:
• How is this movie related advertising and to the ideas of adcult?
• How is the art created by graffitti artists similar to advertising? How is it different?
• How is this an example of adcult?
• How is it in opposition to adcult?
• How is this similar to the idea of creating meaning and “consuming advertising”?
• What about brands and branding?
• Do you think that this is an example of the dumbing down of our culture or is it a commentary on the dumbing down?
• Twitchell talks about our culture becoming derivative because the only measure of the worth of something is the number of eyes it attracts for advertisers. Banksy and the other artists use derivative images to create their art. Do you think this is related to Twitchell’s ideas?
• Is this movie serious? Or is it a parody of adcult?
If this topic does not appeal to you, you may identify another theme in the movie and discuss that; however, you must clearly argue for your interpretation, using examples from the movie.
In the introduction, you will briefly summarize the movie and introduce the theme you will argue for.. Then introduce your thesis, your analysis of the movie. For example, I might have a thesis in which I say that Banksy’s art and the movie are actually an attempt to subvert adcult. Or I might have a thesis in which I say that the movie is a clever parody of adcult.
In the body of your essay, you will argue for your analysis of the movie. Each paragraph will develop one reason why you believe your analysis is accurate, using examples that illustrate your position. You should also consider opposing interpretations of the movie and address those.
In your conclusion, you will sum up your ideas and wrap up your paper.
If you use outside sources, you must cite them correctly in the text and include a works cited page. However, these are not required.
