Premise: You are a local producer at Rebel FM, an online multi-media company tasked with developing new podcast content for the city of Houston. You will be writing a memo that proposes the development of an original podcast that focuses on any subject which interests you, and which you believe would appeal to your target audience. *Your memo will use at least one outside source to provide persuasive evidence for the need and usefulness of your podcast.
A podcast is an audio file made available on the Internet for downloading to a computer or portable mobile device (MP3 player, IPod, etc.). Podcasts often consist of episodic series or installments that are typically subscribed to and downloaded through web syndication or streamed online. According to the Pew Research, “more than one in four” American Internet users now regularly download and listen to podcasts.
Organization: Use the sample recommendation reports from Chapter 21: Informal Reports in your textbook; specifically the sample memo in Chapter 21 (page 504-505) Memo: Trans Globe Airlines and Memo: State Pension Fund (page 502-502).
*Use these sample memos as basic templates for the design and organization of your report; however, the page-design is up to you. Be creative, and use the elements in a format that makes the most sense for your purpose.
Your report should include the following content:
• Title of podcast
• Describe the audience
• Identify the host (s) and their qualifications
• Introduce and provide a persuasive argument for the need and relevance of your podcast subject. The broad categories of which might include any topics related to news, technology, entertainment, sports, education, history, politics, religion, cooking, home repair, or DIY programming.
• Choose the episode length and scheduling (once a week?; once a month?)
• Provide an outline/summary of the format. In other words, what segments will you include and in what order? For example, your “show” might begin with theme music, followed by a brief introduction, then “news” or an “interview.” You might include “reviews” or “analysis” or “tip of the day” or any other engaging, creative segment you imagine.
• End with a concluding statement or summary of need and the probable success of your podcast.
Outside Sources: Use at least one outside source to support your argument for why your podcast would be successful, or is needed by the community. This can be an online website, journal, newspaper, or magazine. Cite your source, data, research, or statistic in APA format as described in the textbook.
