But reason-giving is possible and the outlines of a workable theory can be developed.

You should begin your thinking by looking again at Monroe Beardsley’s theory of art evaluation, especially its strengths and weaknesses. Beardsley presents a solid, formalistic approach that is well known and respected in the literature. Next, you might consider the contextualistic factors that Beardsley has perhaps neglected. These factors might include obvious things like: craftsmanship, creativity, strength of the idea behind the piece, comparing the piece against known examples of its type, its place in art history, or perhaps there is something else you feel should be considered that hasn’t been mentioned.

The impossibility of a perfect theory is taken into consideration for grading, but good grammar and spelling, a well-structured argument, and the use of specific examples are required. Your essay should be exactly two pages and double-spaced.
