Answer the following questions (minimum of one paragraph for each question) and bring a typed, hard copy to class for our in-class discussion/activity:
Brown, Gafni, Roberts, Byrne, and Majumdar (2004) discuss the prevalence of mental health problems in youth and review a number of programs that aim to support this population. The term ‘mental immune system’ stood out to me and I was drawn to this parallel. The idea that our society takes great care to protect the physical immune system for children begs the question that the same attention should be paid to build up their social/emotional immune system.
Identify ways that your program is helping to build resilience in the target population. How are the youth being prepared to deal with adversity, taught strategies and coping mechanisms, and developing confidence?
Durlak, Weissberg, and Pachan (2010) identified a specific approach to working with young people in after-school programs as a more effective practice in promoting personal and social skills. The acronym SAFE (Sequenced, Active, Focused, Explicit) was introduced and used to evaluate the outcomes of 68 different programs. There were significant findings associated with programs that use a method similar to SAFE.
Identify ways that your program uses one or more of the SAFE techniques and any outcomes that you see in relation to this approach.
If your program does not use any of the SAFE techniques, how is this impacting effectiveness of your program? In which ways could change be made?
