This is not an essay , it is an outline with works cited. This outline will be used to write an essay in the next few days .
You must complete this assignment by the end of week 14, Sunday April 24th
Directions
Read the articles on the American Dream provided to help formulate ideas for an argument on the American Dream and its connection to film.
Develop a thesis that is an argument for a 750-1250 word research paper based on the film your group selected. In this essay your thesis should make an argument about the way the film represents the American dream. This thesis should include a clear argument and main ideas that prove the argument
Then create a topic sentence outline to support your thesis. Be sure your outline has clear topic sentences for each body paragraph and uses evidence to support the topic sentences.
Include textual evidence (quotes/paraphrases) from at least FOUR sources to support your views, including a citation for the film. You may use any of the sources from the annotated bibliographies your group created. Feel free to research additional sources.
Include MLA-formatted in-text citations for each quote/paraphrase.
Finally, create an MLA-formatted works cited page; the works cited should include the sources you will use in the essay. (Remember you must not include sources in your works cited that are not used in the essay; nor may you use sources in the essay that are not cited in the works cited.)
Your goal this week is to develop and write a comprehensive outline that analyzes how the chosen film exhibits aspects of the American Dream (or failed attempts at the American Dream). Your outline should include clear argumentative points, complete evidence, and complete citations (in MLA format, of course).Your outline will then be used to develop a film analysis essay (the essay is due at the end of Week 15).
IMPORTANT REMINDERS:
– it is NOT acceptable to submit a rough draft in lieu of an outline.
– Please also do your best to follow the standard outline format. It’s extremely difficult to effectively assess your outline if I can’t tell what sentence you intend to be your thesis or your topic sentences or your evidence, etc. So make sure you clearly indicate which part of the outline is which.
OTHER HELPFUL ADVICE:
O – Make sure EVERY argument you make relates to HOW THE FILM EXHIBITS ASPECTS OF THE AMERICAN DREAM. This is a film analysis essay, not a discussion of American culture in general
Consider what the film says about American culture, for sure — but make sure your argument focuses squarely on the FILM ITSELF.
– Make sure ALL your points link up–each topic sentence should support the thesis statement. Remember, each point should answer WHY? WHY IS THIS SIGNIFICANT?
Remember that…..
– a strong arguable claim seeks to answer WHY
– a strong arguable claim can be disagreed with
– a strong arguable claim uses language like proves, shows, is evidence of, makes clear that, demonstrates
– a strong arguable claim is specific, not general — discuss elements of the American Dream, and key moments from the film.
– a strong arguable claim can be proven with evidence. Provide key quotes/paraphrases from your sources (AND from the film) that support your point.
