You must properly cite all sources to which you refer.
Part 1: Representation & Meaning
Select a specific example of communication that will serve as your case study. You can
choose any form of communication, such as a painting, a photograph, a letter, a speech, a
piece of music, an advertisement, a scene from a film or TV show, a website, etc. Since you
will be doing a very detailed analysis, itʼs important you select a case that is manageable,
e.g. if you are considering a film you should select a particular scene or sequence of shots.
1. Write a 1- to 2 page (double-spaced) essay providing a general description of your
example. Include all relevant details someone would need to understand it, such as:
What is it? When and where does it take place? Who made it and why? Who are the
participants? Through what mechanism/medium does it occur?
2. In a two-column format, provide a close reading of the example (2 single-spaced
pages maximum):
Column 1: Denotation Column 2: Connotation
In column one, provide a detailed,
comprehensive denotative description of
your case. Catalog each signifying element
that contributes to its meaning, without
interpreting it. Include only literal and
objective details such as words, visual
elements, qualities like color, texture,
motion, sounds or other perceptual
elements.
In column two, provide a connotative
reading of each of the elements described
in column one. Here, explain the implied
meanings of the detonative elements. This
requires more interpretation, but still
focuses on the immediate broadly shared
meaning of each element. That is, the
connotative description aims to articulate
what you believe would be obvious
meanings that the intended audiences
would understand, rather than what the
case means to you personally.
