Guidelines for the Final Paper

You are required to write a research paper that makes a theoretical argument. This means that the two basic prerequisites you need to meet are conducting research and establishing an argument.

An argument is a contentious issue that can be counter-argued.

The argument needs to be established in very beginning, before or after introducing a short context for the argument.

The argument needs to be theoretical, which means that you engage one or more interrelated concepts we have discussed in class.

The argument is established after a preliminary research. The result of this initial research is to come up with a theoretically contentions issue that you need to address.

Once you establish the argument you need to conduct a more in-depth research in order to prepare its defense and/or substantiation. At this point, you are encouraged to not only incorporate the primary sources included in the course syllabus but secondary sources as well. Secondary sources are academic texts (books, articles) that engage the issues, theories and authors who form the primary sources of your writing.

You are welcome to discuss artworks and movements as long as they are relevant for your theoretical argument. Examples of such engagement with art works in terms of theory are Peter Buerger’s Avant-gardiste Work of Art and Benjamin’s Author as Producer, in addition to our in-class discussion of artworks in relation to theory.

Do not drift into directions that pull you away from your argument. Try to be as specific as possible, and avoid discussing issues about humanity and the universe. Do not make general points that you cannot possibly argue.

Make sure that all the references are properly cited. If you are quoting from a text directly, you must include the quote in quotation marks and cite the source in the footnotes. If you are paraphrasing an idea, you need to cite the source as well. Failure to do so constitutes plagiarism.
