Community wide immunisation programmes are one of the top public health achievements of the 20th Century in their effectiveness at controlling, eliminating or even eradicating infectious diseases. International concern is rising as such measures are today challenged by sectors of the population. Not taking recommended vaccines can result in negative health outcomes to the individual and the community.
In exploring this current Public Health issue, you are required to construct a three-part report.
Select one Vaccine-Preventable Disease (VPD) that is covered by a vaccine that is recommended in Australia. It could be recommended for children, adolescents and/or adults.
Part A: Discuss the epidemiology and impact of your chosen VPD in Australia. Compare your Australian findings to another country of your choice and identify similarities and differences between the two countries.
Part B: Identify one at risk population for whom vaccination against your chosen VPD is recommended. Discuss the Australian behavioural, social and environmental risk factors contributing to them not being fully vaccinated. In this section, include current positive and negative media commentary in Australia.
Part C: Identify and briefly describe a key health promoting strategy related to your target group, (such as policy, legislation or primary care) which has been implemented to improve immunisation rates within Australia. Describe three ways this strategy has been or could be evaluated to determine its effectiveness.
Note: The final submission date for this report is Monday11th April 2016, 9am.
A marking guide can be downloaded from the NURS1003 eLearning site.
Presentation of the report:
The content and structure of your report is important; so is the presentation and style.
Please consider the following points:
• ensure the separate parts of your report stand out clearly
• use subheadings appropriately
• number each page and include header and/or footer
• Use consistent and appropriate formatting and formal language.
GUIDELINES FOR ASSESSMENT 1
1. The purpose of this assignment is for you to explore the concepts outlined in this unit of study using immunisation as the topic. We expect you to include in your report concepts such as the social determinants of health; health literacy; health promotion and risk factors and how they relate to vaccine preventable diseases and immunisation.
2. You are expected to conduct literature searches on the topic and utilise the readings for this unit which are relevant. In addition, I have also added resources to the discussion board to get you started. More will be added as we progress through the semester
3. Part A : epidemiology- refers to the distribution and pattern of your chosen disease in AUSTRALIA (The data you are most likely to source is on notifications, hospitalisations and deaths in certain age groups and target groups, you might also include data such as distribution, incidence etc.). You are then asked to compare Australia to a country of your choice—could be a developing nation or a developed nation, such as the United States. What are the differences? Infant mortality from same disease? Mortality in population? What similarities are there?
4. Part B Define an at risk population? For example, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander; homeless…..Who are they? Why are they at risk- discuss the determinants of their health and examine why these contribute to them not being vaccinated.
5. There is a lot of media commentary on this subject- please identify their influence on on the population in general. You can source newspaper articles, media documentaries etc. Remember to be critical of these sources- can you trust them? Are they supported by evidence?
6. Part C–What health promoting strategies are there (remember to relate this to your chosen target group ie. the at risk population you identified in part B). This part looks at what interventions have been used to improve vaccination rates and if they have been effective-look at how they have been evaluated. Why was it effective? Could it be effective in another population? The health promoting interventions may be media campaigns, legislation, policy or initiatives at a primary care level. Please support with evidence.
7. The report format is important- please check your referencing (APA 6th, see resource on line); you need to use formal language-it is an academic report. Use third person; correct grammar and spell check. Try to avoid using descriptive terminology, use scientific terms and aim for analysis rather than description. Check out the Learning centre for writing tips if you are having difficulties. There are many sources available to assist you. (http://opac.library.usyd.edu.au/iii/calendar/month)
8. If you use an acronym write in full first, then abbreviate in brackets after. You can then refer to the acronym for the remainder of the report. Eg. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is responsible for…………..
9. The grading rubric is generic but will outline where you gain marks and what you need to include in your report.
10. Please use the librarians for assistance with your searches.
