In addition to your group presentation, you are required to write an essay for your new venture, of your choice, that provides a crisp and appealing description of your chosen business idea behind the venture and an explanation of its unique value proposition. The idea for your new venture should be chosen and developed either from your guided walk(s) or from your reading of any of the course materials.
You may choose to use the same idea that your group has used for its group presentation and you are also entirely at liberty to choose your own, personal idea. This is because the focus of this essay is on your description of your idea, and how you have developed it based on your chosen literature from this module.
As your essay will be written exclusively for academic examiners you must show a critical understanding:
i) Of one of more entrepreneurship perspectives (economics, finance, cognitive, or organisational) that will be outlined in class, and
ii) Suggest how your chosen literature may help you in guiding your choice of business idea and in developing it into an important value proposition.
The following structure is a guide to the section contents of your individual assignment. The compulsory sections you must include in your assignment are highlighted, while the non-highlighted sections are optional:
1. Summary of your investment proposal and value proposition
2. Critical analysis of your entrepreneurship theory or theories
3. Rationale and development plans for your proposal (based on your chosen theory/theories)
3. Competitor analysis
4. Marketing plan
5. Operational model
6. Management
7. Critical risks and issues
8. Financial prospects
9. Proposed funding plans
Please begin your essay with a brief discussion of the uniqueness and creativity of the idea/s behind your venture, and not of the technical specifications or sophistication of the idea. You should not therefore write a verbose description of your idea/s. Following this initial description you should focus on items 2. and 3. above in explaining why your idea/s matter and how your chosen entrepreneurship theory or theories support your idea/s. These two sections are where most of the marks for this individual assignment are allocated.
Please approach the Module Convener immediately if you are in any doubt about the examination requirements of either assignment.
Individual assignments should have a maximum word length of 3,500 words, excluding references and any appendices, tables, and diagrams. In entrepreneurship, brevity of expression, orally and in writing, is always a virtue, and you should aim to write in as sharp and focused a manner as possible within this wordlimit. Instead of the wrong question that students often ask about the maximum length of assignments, ask yourself: What is the minimum words I need to communicate what I want to communicate? Accordingly as an entrepreneurship student you should always aim for fewer words and not more words simply to reach the maximum wordlimit.
