Literature Review

o The literature review should be at least half (1.5+ pages) of your research
proposal. A literature review should establish what we already know
about the topic, as well as identify what the gaps in our knowledge are. It
should set up your research question and justification. You should start
generally, and get more specific throughout. This is the portion of your
research proposal where the majority of your sources will be used.
• Research Question
o Your research question should be stated in the form of a question. Bold
the question so that it is clear.
• Justification
o This portion of your paper can act as the conclusion. It should justify why
the research question you are asking should be researched. Why is your
research question important or significant? What will it contribute to the
literature? What gaps in current knowledge does it address? (This
becomes easier to do if you demonstrate well the gaps in the knowledge
that exist in your literature review).
You do not need to discuss the methodology of how you would answer your research
question, nor should you include a research outline.
Formatting: Papers should be 3 pages (not including the bibliography), double-spaced,
Times New Roman, 12 point font, with 1 inch margins.
Because you have a limited amount of space to work with, you will need to be concise
and to the point in your proposal.
Citations/Sources
You must use at least five sources, of which three must be academic sources from
outside of class (do not use Wikipedia). You will need to cite course material and outside
sources that you use. Use APA style citations. For a citation guide visit the UW library
website.
Grading
Grading will be based on:
1) Level of thought and detail
2) Convincing and thorough argument about the necessity of your research, how it
builds on existing knowledge, and its benefits
3) Supporting evidence using sources
4) Writing quality
