1. One of the recurring characters in this selection is Dra’hada, a lizard-person (Benefactor) living with the Indigenous people from earth on the reservation planet where the story takes place. What is Dra’hada’s relationship with the narrator, Qwalshina, and the broader community in the text? In the universe that Amberstone portrays in Refugees, what is Dra’hada’s political function? To what extent is this character trustworthy, in your estimation? What might be the real-world equivalent of Dra’hada’s character?
2. One of the central features of this passage is the relationship between Qwalshina and her adopted daughter, Sleek. This relationship undergoes some important development, with Qwalshina occasionally mistaking Sleek for Qwalshina’s deceased daughter, Tukta, Sleek’s disappearances, and ultimately, Sleek’s death. What is your interpretation of the relationship between these characters? What relfections does Qwalshina make about their relationship? How do the traditional deities living alongside the people (Granny Night Wind, Sun Fire, and Tree) help Qwalshina navigate the tragedies occurring in the text?
3. In this text, there are several elements that are clearly aspects of contemporary society translated into a science fiction setting (for example, the planet where Qwalshina lives serves as a reservation, with urban Native people from Vancouver being added as refugees). Thus, we can see that Amberstone is potentially using the genre of science fiction to write allegory about the contemporary status of Native peoples. What is the primary political message you think that Amberstone is making in this selection from her novella? What quotes stand out to you as being critically important for decoding these messages?

I think the role of Dra’hada according to the story is a leader of the planet, the person who makes the rules and oversees the people, but is from Earth and not a Native American like them. A real-world equivalent may be the political or military leader of an reservation. However, the relationship with Qwalshina seems to be respectful. Qwalshina definitely shows that she views Dra’hada as the group’s leader, but in a helpful way in that she believes that he wants the best for her people. For example, she felt guilty not informing him about the rumors of Earth, as she felt he should be aware in order to deal with the problem. However, despite her reverence for him, she also feels that he respects her. When the incident happened and Sleek died, she outspoke in what could be considered a rude manner to someone in charge, but he understood her feelings and did not get angry. Because of this, it seems as if Dra’hada was a leader but also a friend to many of the people, possibly because he felt bad for them.
