The new age of American government began in 1789 when the first President George Washington rode in triumph to his inauguration in New York City . But the new government faced many problems and many opponents, meaning that its survival and success were far from ordained. Focusing solely on domestic policies, discuss the Washington and Adams administrations, the problems they faced, the Hamiltonian program, and the rise of the first party system. In your analysis, discuss to what degree the Federalists succeeded in shaping the new Republic? What was the Federalist legacy in domestic life? When Washington took office in 1789, the Republic also faced serious challenges in foreign policy. Discuss the key problems that he and his successor John Adams confronted in the 1790s. To what degree were they, and thus the new government, successful in handling and resolving these crises. To what degree were they unsuccessful in doing so?
