Gallery Critique

Write the critique using the following criteria:
• One to two page typed, 12 pt, double spaced
• State the date and name of gallery, name of artist, and the title of the work. Title to be in Italics.
• In numbered paragraphs, answer 5 of the 6 questions for the piece you chose.

Objective: You must thoroughly understand the meaning of this term. What do you see? (What is actually there…Not what you think is there.)
1. From the work you chose to write about, discuss the use of color in the work. Give specific examples of their use of value, hue, tint, shade, color temperature, etc…

2. Describe how the same piece utilizes the use of line? What processes were used in this particular work?

3. Describe how the piece utilizes the formal element of repetition and state how the element contributes to the composition as a whole.

Subjective: Know the meaning of this term! What do you THINK, KNOW, or think you know.
4. Using the same work of art, write down what is familiar about what you see and why do you recognize it or them. Where have you seen them before and do they have special meaning to you or others?

5. Why do you think the artwork was created? What was the artist’s intent?

6. What do you FEEL, and what do you SEE that makes you feel that way? Are you stimulated? Offended” Soothed? Inspired? Calmed? Confused? Amused? Angry? Insulted? Aroused?
