Your essay should be about 500 words. We do not expect a lot of technical terminology at this stage in the semester. You can draw on your own intuitions and insights into the text and write your discussion in everyday language. You may, if you wish, refer to concepts discussed in Chapter 2 of the textbook, but you are under no obligation to do so. In fact this is an essay where you do not need to make reference to any other source. However, if you do choose to cite material from Chapter 2, make sure you reference anything you quote or paraphrase from it. Please note that in the Linguistics Department the preferred referencing style is APA (American Psychological Association).

Your essay will be assessed partly on content and partly on your ability to construct and communicate your ideas in a coherent essay format. In terms of content we will be looking at what you can sensibly say about the context and purpose of the text, and what evidence you can give from the text to back up your observations. In terms of writing skills we will look at how well you structure the essay (an introduction, body and conclusion with a coherent line of discussion throughout) and how well you express yourself in clear standard written English.

Some of the questions you might ask as you look at the text and prepare your essay include:

? What kind of text is it? If we had not given you the brief contextual information above would you have been able to identify this as the back cover of a book? How do you know, what is your evidence?
? What is the text about? How do you know?
? Who or what is the key focus of the text? Or is there more than one focus? How do
you know?
? What kind of relationship does the writer set up with the reader? What is the evidence to support your observation?
? Are there features of text structure and design (including the graphic design) that help in your understanding of the context of this text.
