Introduction
The use of technology within cars has changed rapidly in recent years with the increasing use of smartphones and MP3 players, the incorporation of DVD players and televisions into headrests and the widespread adoption of sophisticated satellite navigation systems. You are an e-commerce consultant and have been approached by the owner of a local business that specialises in selling in-car entertainment. The business, named ICE (In-Car Entertainment) has 10 shops based in the high streets of various towns in your region. From these shops they sell the following types of products to car owners: ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? Car stereos Car speakers and amplifiers Bluetooth hands-free car kits MP3 players Mobile phone accessories Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) car radios DVD players Satellite navigation systems
The owner is aware of the potential of e-commerce to sell products and services online but has no practical experience of this. However, the owner is keen to exploit the growing level of interest in the use of in-car entertainment and sees e-commerce as a possible means of selling his products to a wider customer base. Initially the owner would like you to assist in looking at the feasibility of setting up an ecommerce site which he proposes to call ICE Online to sell the current range of products to both existing and new customers. As part of this exercise he wishes to understand the potential benefits that e-commerce could provide to him and how such a service might work in practice. The manager is proud of the fact that his current business provides a high level of customer service, with his in-store staff providing practical face-to-face advice and guidance on equipment selection to prospective customers. He has, therefore, asked you as part of the feasibility study to clearly identify the benefits that an e-commerce service would bring to customers who wish to order products from the ICE Online. As part of the feasibility study he is also keen to gain an understanding of the preferred method for accepting payments from customers via the proposed e-commerce service. Currently ICE markets its products through adverts that are placed in local newspapers and leaflets which are mailed out to potential customers. In both cases the cost of marketing is high and it is extremely difficult to measure how successful individual marketing campaigns have been. You have also been asked, therefore, to identify the opportunities for emarketing and the potential benefits that it might deliver. The in-car entertainment market is a highly competitive one and pricing is a key issue. The owner of ICE has asked you consider ways in which the levels of stock that he holds could be minimised by improving links with suppliers and adopting a ‘just-in-time’ approach to ordering. His view is that having less money tied up in stock will enable him to offer more competitive prices on individual products that are proving particularly popular.

As part of the ongoing commitment to improving customer service the owner of ICE is also considering setting up an online auction site through which customers could sell their second hand car audio equipment. As a consequence, the owner has also asked you to provide him with some outline details on the preferred approach for setting up this type of auction facility.
Task 1 – 5 Marks
You need to do some research to familiarise yourself with the subject area and to generate some ideas about how you can carry out the rest of the project. There are a number of ecommerce sites that specialise in the supply of in-car entertainment products. Use a maximum of 1 hour to review these resources. Bookmark the relevant sites and make notes on the information you can use in your assignment.
Task 2 – 4 Marks
Produce a project plan for the way you intend to complete the rest of this assignment. For planning, use the timescale you have been allocated for this assignment i.e. from the date you start to the date you submit your assignment. Submit a copy of your plan to your tutor BEFORE you proceed further with the assignment.
Task 3 – 25 Marks
Using PowerPoint or a similar tool, prepare a maximum of fifteen slides that could be used to form the basis of a presentation to the owner of ICE Online. The presentation should focus on: ? ? ? How e-commerce can help streamline existing working procedures and provide a more efficient service to existing customers. How e-commerce has the potential to grow the business by attracting new customers and selling additional products to existing customers. An overview of the approaches that can be taken to provide a payment solution for the new e-commerce service. This should include brief descriptions of TWO (2) payment solutions that could be adopted. In addition, ONE (1) benefit and ONE (1) disadvantages of each approach should be given, together with your recommended solution for the preferred approach that should be adopted.
A brief set of notes should be produced that summarise the main content of the slides and which can be used as handouts at the presentation.
Task 4 – 23 Marks
Write a short marketing plan (of no more than 1000 words) identifying the ways in which the new ICE Online e-commerce service could be promoted. The plan should specify the various activities that could be undertaken in order to make both existing and potential customers aware of the new e-commerce site and encourage them to visit it. These should, ideally, be a mixture of both online and offline activities, with the emphasis largely on the online activities. It should also state how ICE could exploit information gathered from visitors to the site as part of the ongoing marketing campaign. Finally, it should briefly explain why brand management is an important element in marketing e-commerce services and give THREE (3) suggestions on how awareness of the ICE Online brand could be raised.
