Nadia is employed as a paralegal a firm of solicitors, Akhtars, in Luton. She has been employed there since 1st March 2009. Nadia’s line manager, Gemma , the senior partner is very focused on her career and believes that having babies is a great inconvenience to the firm and told staff at a meeting last month that anyone who got pregnant would have to go to antenatal classes in their own time and would only be allowed one months maternity leave which would be unpaid. She said that there would be no guarantee of a return to work after maternity leave as profits were down and there would probably have to be redundancies.
Nadia has recently discovered that she is pregnant and is frightened to tell Gemma.
Advise Nadia on her rights.
Stewart also works for Akhtars as a paralegal. He works full time, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Stewart is a single parent with a seven year old son, Joel. Joel recently fell off his climbing frame and broke his arm in several places. The arm is healing but Joel will need to go to physiotherapy every Monday afternoon for the next few months. Stewart needs to be able to accompany Joel to the physiotherapy sessions and will need time off work.
Advise Stewart as to the best way to achieve the necessary time off.
